Privacy Policy
Privacy should be understandable.
This policy explains what Scout Local™ collects, how we use it, who we share it with, and the choices you have. It applies to the Scout Local mobile app and the joinscoutlocal.com website.
Scout Local is a product of Novalyse LLC ("Scout Local," "we," "us," or "our"). We help military families find trusted local businesses, services, and events near their base, and we maintain a verified directory of military-spouse-owned businesses. This Privacy Policy describes our practices for the Scout Local mobile app (iOS and Android) and the Scout Local website.
1. Information we collect
Account information. When you create an account, we collect your name, email address, authentication identifier, and information needed to secure and operate your account. If you use Sign in with Apple, Apple provides the information you choose to share with Scout Local, such as your Apple account identifier and any name or email address Apple shares with us.
Profile and personalization information. We collect your selected military installation or base, military connection, branch, time at base, arrival status, household stage, age eligibility, date of birth, children's age ranges if you choose to provide them, top needs, and discovery preferences. Some fields are optional. We use this information to personalize the directory and recommendations shown to you. Scout Local does not publish a family's profile, selected base, saved businesses, or live presence.
Business owner and listing information. If you submit, claim, or manage a business or organization listing, we collect information such as your name, email address, phone number, business address or service area, business description, categories, hours, website, social links, photos, logos, ownership information, and verification information. Approved listing information and public business contact details may be displayed publicly in the Scout Local directory or on our website.
Content, reports, press, and support information. We collect content you submit through Scout Local, including business listings, event suggestions, Open Now Beacon messages, saved businesses, Beacon follows, listing reports, feedback, media kit requests, support requests, and other messages you send us. Media kit requests may include your name, email address, organization, and request source.
Photos and camera access. If you add a business photo, logo, event flyer, or event photo, Scout Local accesses only the image you select or the photo you take for that purpose. Photo-library and camera permission are not required for ordinary directory browsing.
Device, diagnostic, and usage information. We collect limited technical and usage information used to operate, secure, and improve Scout Local. This may include app version, device type, operating system, screen dimensions, session or anonymous identifiers, sign-in activity, selected base, screens viewed, searches, listing and event interactions, saves, contact actions, Beacon activity, notification opens, and timestamps. Depending on whether you are signed in, usage information may be associated with your account, device, or an anonymous session identifier.
Push notification information. If you enable notifications, we store a push-notification token associated with your device, along with platform, device, app version, and notification preference information needed to deliver the notifications you choose. You can turn notifications off in the app or your device settings. Scout Local does not use the advertising identifier, track activity across other companies' apps or websites, or sell usage information.
Payment information. The Scout Local app offers no paid features, subscriptions, in-app purchases, Stripe Checkout, paid digital content, or payment collection in the app.
2. How we use information
We use information to:
- Create, authenticate, secure, and maintain accounts.
- Operate the business and event directory.
- Personalize directory content and recommendations based on a user's selected base and preferences.
- Review, verify, publish, and maintain business and event listings.
- Operate saved businesses, Beacon follows, alerts, and business-owner tools.
- Send authentication, account, listing-review, moderation, and other service-related communications.
- Send optional product news or promotional email only when the user has chosen to receive it.
- Respond to reports, feedback, privacy requests, and customer-support requests.
- Measure feature usage, diagnose technical problems, prevent abuse, and improve Scout Local.
- Comply with legal obligations and protect the rights, safety, and security of Scout Local, its users, and the public.
3. Military family privacy
Base affiliation can be operationally sensitive, so Scout Local is built to protect it. We do not publish public user profiles, your saved-place activity, or live presence indicators tied to your base. We do not sell military family data, and we do not share it with advertisers.
4. How we share information
We do not sell personal information or share it for cross-company behavioral advertising. We share information only with service providers that help us operate Scout Local and only for the purposes described in this policy. These providers include:
- Supabase — database hosting, authentication, file storage, and server functions.
- Expo and the Expo push service — app delivery and push notifications.
- Resend — transactional email and optional email updates.
- Apple — Sign in with Apple authentication, when you choose that sign-in method.
- Vercel Analytics and Speed Insights — website analytics and performance measurement.
- GovX and AMSE — military-ownership or military-spouse-ownership verification, when a business owner chooses an applicable verification process.
- Diagnostic service providers — limited error, crash, stability, and performance information, when enabled.
We may also disclose information when required by law, to protect rights and safety, or as part of a merger, acquisition, financing, or sale of business assets. Where information is shared, it remains subject to each provider's own privacy practices.
5. Your choices and rights
You can update profile and notification preferences inside the app. You can turn push notifications off in Scout Local or in your device settings. Optional marketing email can be disabled in your profile or through the unsubscribe link included in those messages.
You can permanently delete your Scout Local account inside the app by opening Profile, selecting Delete account, and completing the confirmation process. Account deletion removes or anonymizes personal account information, saved activity, notification registrations, and ownership associations. Public directory information may remain when necessary to preserve an accurate community directory, but it will no longer be associated with the deleted account as its owner. For more details, see Delete my data.
You may request access to, correction of, or deletion of personal information by contacting hello@joinscoutlocal.com. Depending on where you live, additional privacy rights may apply, including rights to know what we collect, request deletion, and not be discriminated against for exercising privacy rights. We honor these requests for all users.
6. Children's privacy
Scout Local is intended for users 13 and older and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us information, contact us and we will delete it.
7. Data retention and security
We keep information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the service and meet legal, accounting, or reporting obligations, after which we delete or anonymize it. We use reasonable administrative and technical safeguards, including database access controls and encrypted transport, to protect your information. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure.
8. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as Scout Local evolves. We will revise the "Last updated" date above and, for material changes, provide additional notice where appropriate.
